AGAINST THE ODDS: The GIRL That RAISED HERSELF AND SURVIVED
What is Complex PTSD? Similar to PTSD, it’s the result of experiencing a traumatic situation. The difference is that C-PTSD stems from prolonged exposure to psychological, physical, or sexual abuse in childhood. Mine particularly stems from growing up in a cold, unloving household, never knowing my father, and losing my innocence by force, by multiple abusers, at a house party at the age of fourteen. The symptoms are flashbacks, nightmares, suicidal ideation, an unstable sense of self, and a likelihood to be a victim of abuse again in the future. I want to tell my story because it’s important for me not only to help end this stigma surrounding mental illness, but to own my title as a survivor, not a victim.
